T
here are places remembered through exact details, and others remembered through color, movement and atmosphere.
In Untitled (Chiapas), Bill Suttles captures the activity of a Mexican street through loose washes and passages of yellow, violet, rose and green. Rather than describing Chiapas literally, the watercolor holds Bill’s memory of the place—its architecture, market activity, light and energy.
In the short Show & Tell video below, Bill revisits Chiapas, discusses the artwork and reflects on his lifelong connection with art and painting.
These conversations are part of an ongoing effort to document Bill’s artistic process and preserve over seventy years of experience as a working American painter.
