Side Glance — A Landscape Caught Just Off Center

Apr 3 2026 | By: Todd Suttles

Share

There are moments in the landscape that do not announce themselves. They sit just off to the side—quiet, nearly missed—waiting for you to turn your head slightly and notice. Side Glance feels like that kind of moment. Not the main road, not the obvious subject, but something glimpsed in passing that ends up staying longer than what you were originally looking for.

This piece carries that loose, searching quality that comes when the eye is not locked into a single focal point. The tree anchors the composition, but even it feels temporary—more like a gesture than a fixed object. The barns recede, partially obscured, while color does much of the work: violets and greens pressing against each other, building atmosphere instead of description.

There is a sense here of movement without motion. Not wind, not action—but the shifting of attention itself. The marks are quick, responsive, and selective. What is left out matters as much as what is included. This is not simply a painting about a place so much as it is about the act of noticing—how the peripheral can become the subject if you give it just a second longer.

From the Archive
Bill Suttles has long had the ability to find a painting not only in the scene itself, but in the passing arrangement of color, structure, and instinct that another eye might overlook.

This is part of the continuum we see again and again in Bill’s work—the ability to find the painting not in the obvious scene, but in the fleeting alignment of color, structure, and instinct. It is a lifetime habit at this point: seeing something sideways, catching it before it disappears, and translating it quickly enough to hold onto that first impression. These are the moments that do not pose, do not wait—but reward you if you are paying attention.
