What Inspired Bill Suttles? An Artist Looks Back

By: Todd Suttles

Share
Artist Bill Suttles discussing the influences and experiences that shaped his artwork during a conversation with his son, Todd Suttles.

W

hat shapes an artist over a lifetime?

In this conversation, Bill Suttles looks back at some of the influences that helped form his visual imagination—from the illustrated magazines he encountered as a young artist to the places, people and experiences that continued to influence his work across the decades.

Bill began his professional life in the early 1950s, after studying at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Commercial illustration was part of that world, but so were publications such as The Saturday Evening Post and Redbook, filled with the work of illustrators who demonstrated what pictures could do: tell stories, capture character and make ordinary moments memorable.

Those early influences did not produce a single “Bill Suttles style.” His work continued to change as his life changed. Travel, landscapes, cities, people and decades of looking all became part of the vocabulary he brought to his own paintings.

In the video below, Todd Suttles asks Bill a simple question about those influences. What follows is less a formal interview than a conversation between father and son—one small piece of a much larger effort to document Bill’s life and work in his own words.

These conversations are part of the ongoing Suttles Arts project to preserve not only the artwork, but also the memories, experiences and stories behind it.
