Growing up in the 1930s, my dad was absolutely captivated by aviation—especially the early biplanes that represented the cutting edge of possibility at the time. He sketched them endlessly as a kid, filling page after page with wings, propellers, and imagined flight paths. That early fascination never left him, and every so often it resurfaces in paintings like this one. Fly-in, Santee, SC was inspired by an antique biplane gathering he attended years ago, where he spent more time watching the mechanics, the light, and the conversations on the ground than the planes in the air. That’s what comes through here: two figures caught in a quiet moment under the wing, sunlight diffused through the structure of the aircraft, and all the nostalgia and wonder that aviation held for him. Even now, knowing his history, I can see the child he once was folded gently into this scene.
