A scending moves like a breath you can see — forms rising, pausing, and rising again. Color feels weightless, yet each edge carries intention. My father has a way of letting a composition lift itself; he guides the motion without forcing it, and the piece finds its own altitude.
In the studio, he often begins with quiet gestures and a few decisive shapes, then listens for where the energy wants to go. Ascending reads like that listening: a steady climb of hues and intervals, a balance between lightness and structure. It suggests progress without hurry — the feeling of arriving by way of patience.
This is a recent studio work and is available.
This reflection is part of the Suttles Continuum, our family’s living archive and storytelling project. Through it, we’re preserving not just the artwork, but the rhythm of an ongoing creative life — the sketches, finished works, and stories that connect generations. Each piece, including Ascending, adds another line to that story, reminding us that creativity is a conversation that keeps evolving.
Studio Notes
What I love in Ascending is the lift you feel without any single element shouting for attention. The work rises because the small choices cooperate — edges, intervals, and rests — the way a song climbs on quiet notes.
It’s a reminder for me to trust the upward pull in my own process: guide it, don’t rush it, and let the piece decide how high it needs to go.
