STRATA
12 x 12 inches, mixed media on paper — Sold
“Strata” is one of those pieces where my dad’s instinct for building a painting from the ground up—literally in layers—really shows. He stacks color the way some people stack stories: bold sweeps of orange, soft earth tones, flashes of blue and yellow that cut through and shift the whole rhythm of the composition.
What I love about this one is how much movement he can create without relying on figures or a clear subject. The energy comes from the way the shapes press against each other, the way one mark interrupts another, the way the surface feels both rough and intentional. It’s abstract, but it never feels distant.
Even though this piece has already found its home, it stays with me as an example of how confidently he works when he’s in that mode of pure exploration—just responding, adjusting, letting the painting lead.
