Over the years, my father’s work has shifted gradually from representation toward abstraction. What began in landscape and figurative painting loosened over time, as subject matter gave way to rhythm, balance, and the physical act of painting itself. This wasn’t a sudden turn, but a slow, organic transition that unfolded across decades.
In this short video, Bill talks through that shift using three paintings as reference points. Each one marks a moment where structure began to soften and intuition took a stronger role. What’s striking is how little of this change was planned — much of it emerged naturally in the studio, only becoming clear in hindsight.
For Bill, abstraction was never about abandoning the visible world. It was about trusting what remained when description was no longer the goal. This way of working continues to evolve, shaped by experience, memory, and the simple act of showing up to paint.
