Pieces like Gumlog Homestead feel especially personal to me because they carry so much of my dad’s history inside them. He loves places like this — old houses tucked into the landscape, yards that rolled into fields, and trees that always seemed to hold the memory of whatever season came before. When he paints scenes like this, he isn’t just recording what he sees… he’s reaching back into something lived.
What I love here is how the whole painting seems to breathe. The pastel work is loose but incredibly observant — the quick marks in the trees, the soft daylight on the roofs, even the little shifts of color along the ground. It all adds up to a sense of a place that’s not only real, but remembered.
As I go through and archive these pieces, I’m reminded of how deeply rooted his connection to the southern landscape has always been. Gumlog Homestead isn’t just a house in a field — it’s part of a lifetime of looking closely, noticing color where most people only notice shade, and finding the poetry in familiar ground.
