Original 12 x 12 inch mixed media on paper
Every time I come across one of my dad’s mixed-media pieces like Possibilities, I’m reminded of how naturally he slips into abstraction—almost as if he’s following a conversation the rest of us can only half hear. The shapes feel spontaneous, but there’s always a sense of intention underneath them. You can see him working through an idea, shifting color against color until something clicks.
What I love most here is how open the painting feels. There’s structure, but nothing is pinned down. Edges blur, colors overlap, and the whole image seems to be caught mid-thought. It feels like the visual equivalent of a moment where anything could happen—right before the form resolves into whatever it’s meant to become.
These kinds of works remind me that even after decades in the studio, he’s still exploring, still curious, still pushing himself into new territory. As I archive these pieces, it’s always the ones like Possibilities that make me pause a little longer—because they show just how alive that sense of exploration still is.
