Decision has the quiet of a held breath. Not a stop — more like the pause before something begins.
When I look at it, I think about the times I’ve seen my father lean back from the easel. He studies what’s there, but more than that, he listens. There’s a point in every painting where direction can’t be forced — it has to reveal itself.
The surface of this one feels like that moment: color waiting, shape suspended, rhythm measured by attention rather than movement.
There’s something deeply human about watching someone practice patience — not as hesitation, but as trust. Decision lives in that space. It reminds me that choice can be an act of faith: in the work, in the process, in the quiet knowing that the next move will come when it’s ready.
I think that’s what art teaches most — not how to act, but how to wait with purpose.
This reflection is part of the Suttles Continuum, our family’s living archive and storytelling project. Through it, we’re preserving not just the artwork, but the rhythm of an ongoing creative life — the sketches, finished works, and stories that connect generations. Each piece, including Decision, adds another line to that story, reminding us that art often speaks through silence.
This painting has followed me around the studio for weeks. I think I needed to learn from its restraint.
It’s easy to confuse action with progress, but sometimes the real work happens when we stop pushing and start noticing. There’s calm in the waiting, and maybe that’s the truest decision of all.
