This piece has always felt like one of Dad’s clearest expressions of how he saw color in the world—not just what was there, but what it felt like. Across the Valley takes a familiar Appalachian hillside and charges it with energy: golds and reds flickering through the trees, that deep cobalt rise in the distance, and light pooling across the ground like a memory you’re trying to hold onto.

As I go back through the archive, this one reminds me how effortlessly he blended observation with invention. The landscape stays recognizable, but the colors push it toward something more poetic—almost musical.
