Original 12 x 9 inch mixed media with collage on paper
Here’s another one of Dad’s pieces where the title really fits—everything in this artwork is about contrast and placement. Juxtaposed feels like a quiet experiment that somehow turned into a fully realized composition: textured neutrals pushed up against that sharp, reddish collage shape, and warm yellows drifting through like light on worn stone.
When I look at it now, I can see him working through relationships—weight vs. openness, gesture vs. calm, rough vs. refined. Pieces like this make me appreciate how naturally he moved between intention and improvisation. Even in a modest, intimate work like this one, there’s a whole conversation happening on the surface.
As I archive these, I’m realizing how many small works carried big ideas. This one definitely does.
