Far and Away
Pastel on Paper — 12 x 16 in
Far and Away is one of those pieces where my dad’s ability to distill a landscape down to its essentials really shows. The distant ridge, the soft shifts in the sky, the loose suggestion of fields and fences—he never overstates anything, yet the place feels completely alive.
What I love most is the sense of depth he creates with just a few deliberate changes in color: the cool blues pulling you back toward the mountain, the warm yellows and greens grounding the foreground. It’s a simple scene on the surface, but it carries a quiet expansiveness—the kind that makes you breathe a little deeper.
Another moment from his lifelong habit of looking closely, and translating not just what he sees, but what he feels.
